West Side Story is a major musical offering of STAGES production this 2008. Balladeer Christian Bautista takes the lead role of Tony and Karylle, alternating as Maria. Also in the cast is London West End’s major star Joanna Ampil, who is currently playing Fantine in “Les Miserables”. Gerard Salonga as the musical director, and together with the FILharmoniKA orchestra is set on stage with first-rate artistic team of Audie Gemora as executive producer, and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo as director.
The Broadway musical was adapted loosely on William Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet,” the young lovers coming from feuding families and set on the west side of Manhattan, New York City. West Side Story takes place in the 1950s when many Puerto Ricans moved to the Big Apple.
“West Side Story” will be staged at the Meralco Theater from September to October 2008.
